Special Educational Needs and More Able (Gifted and Talented Children)
All children have individual needs. We want to enable all those same children to achieve the best social and academic excellence of which they are capable - and we expect that every child will have full access to an appropriate curriculum. Our staff are experienced in identifying children's individual learning needs, whether this means seeing where extra support is needed or providing additional extension activities. However, as many as 1 in 5 children nationally have special educational needs at some time during their educational career and we plan properly to ensure those needs within our own school are met. This involves operating within the 'Code of Practice on the Identification and Assessment of Special Educational Needs,' which involves pupils and parents at every stage and offers a graduated response depending on the needs of the child. Where necessary, we liaise extensively with outside agencies and specialists and employ qualified and experienced Teaching Assistants.
We take equally careful note when a child demonstrates particular aptitude and ability in one, or more, areas of the curriculum, or during an extra-curricular activity and we ensure that, as with all other children, the child is appropriately challenged and given opportunities to develop their abilities, skills or talents at an appropriate level in a supportive environment.
